The Replacements
When people use the words retard, retarded, or gay, they are targeting and degrading specific groups of people. There are so many other options for words that they could use instead of those few words that aren't as offending.

We all should choose our words carefully and with the knowledge of the impact they can have on other people. However, many of the words in this Wordle are words that can be used in a completely inoffensive way, Also, we must keep in mind that most older people grew up using words such as "retarded" and "faggot" and "gay" in a casual way, without necessarily meaning to be hateful or hurtful. While a clear thinking, well intentioned person should not use these words, people do sometimes use them out of careless habit, rather than in an intentional, hurtful way.
ReplyDeleteActually, the fact that the words can be used in an inoffensive way is the main idea of the wordle these are the "replacements" for words such as gay and retarded. And you bring up an interesting point in that many adults grew up using these words without bad intentions. And I think that is precisely the point of this blog, to educate people about using words that might be seen as harmless, and showing how they can mean more than that to others.
